Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L'Huillier were awarded The Nobel Prize in Physics. For their work on electron dynamics in matter.
Their research demonstrates a way to create extremely short pulses of light that can be used to provide information about processes inside atoms and molecules.
The Nobel Committee on Tuesday congratulated the three scientists for their work exploring the behavior of electrons on a one-attosecond time scale. Electrons are subatomic particles present in all atoms and have a negative charge.
An attosecond is a trillionth of a second. The Nobel Committee said the work of several laureates had made it possible to study processes on such timescales. These processes are too fast to track.
The winner of the Nobel Prize in physics will receive 11 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to about $1 million, which will be split equally between the winners.

Anne Lillier is the fifth woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physics.
