Jailed Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her work against the oppression of Iranian women and to promote human rights and freedoms.
Mohammadi is one of Iran's leading human rights activists and has long spoken out for women's rights and the abolition of the death penalty.
Announcing the prize, Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, opened with the slogan "Women, life, freedom," which was the slogan of a mass feminist movement that erupted in the Islamic Republic last year. The movement erupted after Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish girl, was killed while in the custody of Iran's morality police. Mohammadi, 51, has long exemplified those principles at great personal cost, Reiss-Andersen said.
"In total, the Iranian regime arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes," Reiss-Andersen said. "Mohammadi is still in prison as I speak."
The cash prize for this year's prize is 11 million Swedish kronor, or about $1 million.
