The reporter learned from TSMC that on February 24th, the first factory of Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (JASM) under TSMC held an opening ceremony. This factory located in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan is the first factory opened by TSMC in Japan.
TSMC founder Zhang Zhongmou attended the opening ceremony. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced through video that the Japanese government has decided to support the JASM expansion plan.
JASM was jointly established by TSMC and Sony Semiconductor Solutions in 2021. The first factory started construction in April 2022 and is expected to begin production by the end of 2024. The second wafer factory constructed by JASM is planned to start construction by the end of 2024 and be put into operation by the end of 2027.
With these two wafer factories, JASM is expected to provide over 100000 12 inch wafers per month, using processes such as 40nm, 22/28nm, 12/16nm, and 6/7nm, to contract related products for automotive, industrial, consumer, and high-performance computing applications. JASM's total investment will exceed 20 billion US dollars. These two wafer fabs are expected to directly create over 3400 high-tech jobs.
