The self-developed chip here has just been updated, and there is new news about Apple's self-developed battery.
According to ETNews in South Korea, Apple is advancing battery development and plans to apply the battery to its own electronic devices starting from 2025.
Apple's goal is to develop a completely new type of battery that significantly improves battery performance through "new materials that are completely different from existing materials".
For this reason, Apple directly participates in the development of battery materials. Among them, Apple plans to produce cathode materials by mixing nickel, cobalt, manganese, aluminum and other raw materials, which determine the energy density, output power, stability and other performance of the battery.
Among the negative electrode materials, Apple plans to significantly increase the silicon content, or use silicon based negative electrodes. One drawback of silicon in batteries before was that during the charging and discharging process, the volume of silicon would expand. It is reported that Apple's technology has overcome this defect in silicon.
In addition, Apple also plans to use carbon nanotubes to improve the performance of battery materials. Carbon nanotubes are one-dimensional quantum materials formed by curling single-layer or multi-layer graphene layers. Currently, they are gradually applied as a new type of conductive agent in lithium batteries, and have obvious advantages in chemical stability, mechanical properties, and conductivity compared to traditional conductive agents.
In fact, Apple's self-developed battery can be traced back at least five years - as early as 2018, Apple's recruitment and patent applications revealed that the company was developing batteries; In 2019, Apple also hired former executives from Samsung SDI to join its own battery development project.
Several industry insiders familiar with Apple's situation pointed out that with the continuous expansion of experiences such as MR, the demand for high-performance batteries in devices has also increased.
Apple seems to be advancing the "dual track" battery research and development project for electronic devices and electric vehicles. The batteries that have been rumored this time are mainly used in electronic devices, and there have been reports that Apple plans to install self-developed batteries in Apple Cars.
It is worth noting that the positive electrode materials mentioned above, such as nickel, cobalt, manganese, as well as carbon nanotubes and silicon based negative electrodes, have been applied in power batteries, especially Tesla, which has/plans to use similar technologies. In addition, GAC Aian has been applied to silicon carbon negative electrodes, and Ningde Times has also developed high nickel ternary+silicon carbon negative electrode cells.
