On September 28th, Tesla announced that the number of cars produced and exported overseas by its Shanghai Gigafactory has exceeded one million. In the early morning of that day, the "Carrera" roll on/roll off ship from the Marshall Islands docked at Shanghai South Port. After completing the border inspection and entry procedures, 1649 Tesla cars began loading operations.
This year marks Tesla's 10th anniversary in the Chinese market. On April 22, 2014, Tesla began its first deliveries in China, and Musk flew in from the United States to personally hand over the keys to the first batch of Model S owners. On July 10, 2018, Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory officially signed a contract and landed in Lingang. This is the first foreign investment project in China after the implementation of the policy to lift restrictions on foreign ownership of new energy vehicles, and also the largest foreign manufacturing project in Shanghai's history.
Tesla's Vice President of External Affairs, Tao Lin, recently stated that in just four years since the first batch of vehicles were exported, Chinese made Tesla has been exported to multiple countries and regions such as Europe, Asia Pacific, Australia and New Zealand, and has gained high recognition in overseas markets. In 2023, Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory delivered a total of 947000 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 33%, accounting for more than half of its global production capacity.
In May of this year, Tesla's Shanghai energy storage super factory also started construction. Tesla's previously disclosed information shows that the factory is expected to start production in the first quarter of 2025. After production, the output of the ultra large energy storage battery Megapack will reach 10000 units, with an energy storage capacity of nearly 40 gigawatt hours (1 gigawatt hour=1000 megawatt hours).
It is worth mentioning that Shanghai Nangang Port is only 10 kilometers away from Tesla's Shanghai Lingang Super Factory. Since its opening and operation in August 2013, Nangang Port has gradually become the "doorstep" port for large enterprises such as Sany Heavy Industry, Siemens, Tesla, SAIC, etc., supporting "port manufacturing and port export".
Shanghai Nangang is a national first-class open port and the only port that directly connects to the land area of Yangshan Special Comprehensive Bonded Zone. It has built 9 berths in the first phase of the terminal, which can accommodate up to 50000 ton general ship types and 70000 ton roll on/roll off ship types. It has the policy advantage of "one line clearance" and the location advantage of "district port integration".
The relevant person in charge previously told a reporter from The Paper that Shanghai Nangang, as a national first-class open port, currently has three main business sectors, including domestic and foreign trade roll on/roll off, cold chain, and miscellaneous services. Among various businesses, roll on/roll off business is a pillar industry of the port and has become an important part of Shanghai Port's roll on/roll off business striving to become the world's number one
Since its opening in August 2013, Shanghai Nangang has completed a total of 4.45 million roll on/roll off vehicles. As of now this year, a total of 626 ships have docked, including 400 domestic roll on/roll off ships and 174 foreign roll on/roll off ships. Shanghai Nangang has completed a total of 724500 roll on/roll off vehicles and over 80000 international transfers.
It is reported that according to the unified strategic planning of Shanghai's port shipping resources, Shanghai Nangang will continuously improve its roll on/roll off service level and accelerate the construction of a world-class roll on/roll off port. In the fourth quarter of 2024, the construction of the second phase of Shanghai Nangang Port will be completed, which can achieve a roll on/roll off throughput capacity of 2.5 million vehicles per year.
