New export controls in the United States may force AI chip giant Nvidia to cancel billions of dollars in advanced process chip orders to China next year, which may prevent Chinese technology companies from accessing critical AI resources.
According to insiders, NVIDIA has previously completed the delivery of advanced process AI chip orders to China this year and is striving to deliver some orders for 2024 in advance before the new regulations were originally scheduled to take effect in mid November.
But last week, the US government wrote to NVIDIA stating that new export restrictions on the sale of high-end chips in some countries, including China, will take effect immediately.
The above informed person said that China's leading AI and cloud computing companies, including Alibaba Group, TikTok's parent company ByteDance and Baidu, have placed large orders for delivery next year. One of the insiders said that the order volume of major Chinese companies in 2024 exceeded $5 billion.
A spokesperson for Nvidia stated that the company is already providing its advanced AI computing system to customers in the United States and other regions, and is seeking to increase supply. The graphics card chips used in these systems are affected by the export restrictions mentioned above.
