According to Upstream News, a car owner of the Ideal L9 in Xiangyang, Hubei Province, recently claimed that he had activated the auxiliary driving system on the highway, and the vehicle detected a picture of a small truck on a high-altitude billboard while driving, suddenly braking and causing a rear end collision.
In response, a reporter from the Daily Economic News asked Ideal Automobile for confirmation, and the other party stated that "the cause of the accident was the misidentification of the image as a real car, which was indeed a system misidentification.".
It is worth mentioning that there have been similar cases in the industry before. For example, Tesla has been reported to have experienced a suspected "ghostly braking" incident, where the vehicle suddenly slowed down and stopped while activating autonomous driving assistance.
It is understood that "ghost braking" refers to the situation where the intelligent driving system suddenly decelerates or brakes without obvious obstacles, and most of the reasons are due to false detection by vehicle sensors.
Some analysts believe that in the field of intelligent driving, whether it is Tesla's pure visual route or the combination of millimeter wave radar and LiDAR, these methods can only be used as the perception category and method of the vehicle towards the outside world. However, ultimately, the vehicle still needs to rely on its own software algorithms to achieve auxiliary control of the vehicle. For this issue, enterprises need excellent software optimization, as well as a large number of road tests to accumulate samples and help intelligent driving capabilities continuously self learn and optimize. In response, Ideal Automobile also stated that it will improve its software system in the future.
