After Congress passed a measure to keep the government open but did not include more funding for the war in Ukraine, defense officials said the Pentagon had just over $5 billion left to provide weapons and other security assistance to Ukraine.
If the United States continues to deliver supplies to Ukraine at the pace it has since early March, the remaining funds could provide about six months 'worth of weapons. That represents about 11 percent of the total $43.9 billion in security assistance the United States has provided since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
The Ukraine Security Assistance Program, another installment of U.S. funding to improve Ukraine's military over the long term and bring it more into line with the standards of North Atlantic Treaty Organization forces Initiative) has been exhausted.
Biden administration officials and senators stressed over the weekend that a suspension of U.S. support for Ukraine could be extremely damaging to the war effort and urged Congress to quickly pass a bill providing more funding.
On Monday, Pentagon officials sought further clarification on the extent to which the lack of new Ukraine funding in the bill passed over the weekend would hinder its efforts to support Kiev.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov on Sunday to "reaffirm U.S. support for Ukraine in responding to Russia's continued aggression and discuss priorities for security assistance," the Pentagon said.
