The National Highway Traffic Safety Commission (NHTSA) revealed on March 18th local time that it has begun investigating a recent fatal accident involving a Ford SUV, which is suspected to be related to Ford's assisted driving technology.
NHTSA stated that the accident in Texas, USA has been included in a special investigation list for potential car collisions related to some autonomous driving functions.
According to a police report, around 10 pm local time on February 24th, a 2022 Ford electric horse SUV collided with the rear end of a stationary Honda CR-V on Interstate 10. The report stated that the Ford driver told the police that the Honda vehicle had come to a complete stop on the road and had no lights on. The report also stated that the driver of the Honda vehicle was taken to the hospital and was declared dead that night. The report states that Ford vehicles "partially utilized autonomous driving functions" during the accident.
Ford stated that the company only recently learned about the accident and expressed sympathy for the relevant personnel. The car manufacturer stated, "The full facts of this incident are not yet clear... Ford immediately notified NHTSA upon learning of the incident, and we are actively studying all available information."
