Citing a lack of progress in negotiations, the United Auto Workers expanded the strike to include Ford Motor (F) plants in Chicago and General Motors (GM) plants in Michigan.
In a live broadcast address Friday morning, UAW President Shawn Fain said the proposal from Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLA) made significant progress on the union's demands, including cost-of-living adjustment allowances.
The walkouts would add nearly 7,000 striking workers to the roughly 18,000 UAW members already on strike at three companies, three assembly plants and dozens of parts distribution facilities. There are about 146,000 union workers at the three Detroit companies.
The union has again expanded its strike at Ford, having let the automaker off the hook last week when Fain said talks were making progress.
Negotiations between the union and the three automakers continued this week.
