Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to form a national unity government with members of the opposition, including former generals, to lead the country through a war cabinet.
A war cabinet, usually during a national emergency, brings together representatives of opposing parliamentary groups to form a broad coalition. Netanyahu initially wanted people with military expertise in the opposition to join his existing coalition.
Before the Hamas raid on Saturday, Israel was locked in a bitter dispute over the Netanyahu government's sweeping judicial reform plans, which have sparked the largest protest movement in Israeli history.
