Sao Paulo, October 22 (Xinhua) -- On the 22nd local time, it was learned from mining giant Vale that the company will showcase numerous innovative low-carbon exhibits at the 7th China International Import Expo to be held in Shanghai in November, including multiple high-quality iron ore products and energy transition metal products, innovative low-carbon solutions such as iron ore compaction, and the world's largest ship model equipped with wind propulsion system.
The headquarters of Vale is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The company has participated in seven expos in full attendance, and this year it will showcase its innovative product, iron ore compacts, which has been developed for nearly 20 years. In addition to physical displays, the booth also features interactive touch screens to help visitors gain a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of this innovative low-carbon solution.
It is reported that iron ore pellet is a product that can be directly fed into the furnace, which can be used for direct reduction of vertical furnace process, production of green metal materials, and providing raw materials for the production of green steel; It can also be used in blast furnaces to replace sintering and pelletizing, thereby reducing carbon emissions in steel production by up to 10%.
Vale will also showcase low-carbon solutions such as Tecnored and mega hubs. Tecnored uses biochar instead of metallurgical coal and coke to produce green pig iron, which can help steel companies reduce or eliminate carbon emissions in steel production. The giant hub is an industrial complex that produces iron ore pellets and uses them as raw materials to produce hot pressed iron blocks (HBI) through a direct reduction route. Compared with the long process route of blast furnace converter, using natural gas to produce HBI can significantly reduce carbon emissions in the steel production chain.
In addition, Vale will also showcase high-quality iron ore ball products, as well as three premium iron ore powder products: Caraganas Powder (IOCJ), Brazilian Blended Powder (BRBF), and Green Refined Powder (PFC1). These products have high iron content and low impurity content, which can increase the productivity of the steel production process, reduce slag, and lower emissions.
Another highlight of the Vale booth at this year's CIIE is a ship model made in a 1:240 ratio of the world's largest ship equipped with a wind propulsion system. The prototype ship is named "Sohar Max" and is a Valemax type mineral sand ship, with a length of 362 meters, a width of 65 meters, and a loading capacity of 400000 tons. There are 5 rotor sails installed on the deck, which utilize offshore wind energy to generate auxiliary thrust. This device can improve the energy efficiency of ships by up to 6%, and thus reduce carbon emissions by up to 3000 tons per ship per year. Vale launched the "Ecological Shipping Plan" in 2021, which aims to reduce carbon emissions generated during iron ore shipping by applying cutting-edge technology to the company's leased fleet.
The "Sohar Max" ship is operated by the Omani shipowner Asyad and is mainly used for the transportation of iron ore between Brazil and China. The rotor sail technology used was developed and provided by the British manufacturer Anemoi, while the installation and modification of the rotor sail was completed by Zhoushan Zhongyuan Shipping Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Ocean Shipping Group Co., Ltd.
