Johnson is a close ally of former President Trump. Prior to his election, the Republican Party had a series of promising candidates, which prompted some lawmakers to question whether any peers could bridge their differences in this highly divided parliament. Now that the Speaker is in place, lawmakers can finally return to work, and many are eager to pass aid to Israel and solve the urgent government funding deadline next month.
