Amazon Web Services (AWS) plans to invest 12 billion Singapore dollars ($8.88 billion) in expanding its cloud computing infrastructure in Singapore over the next four years.
According to a statement, the company has invested 11.5 billion Singapore dollars in the Asia Pacific region by 2023, and this new investment will result in a total planned expenditure of over 23 billion Singapore dollars (approximately 17 billion US dollars) by 2028.
AWS also announced cooperation with the Singapore government, public sector organizations, and businesses to help accelerate the application of artificial intelligence and generative artificial intelligence in Singapore.
Priscilla Chong, AWS Singapore Regional Director, stated, "From 2024 to 2028, AWS will double its investment in cloud infrastructure in Singapore to support customer needs and help consolidate Singapore's position as an attractive regional innovation launch platform."
The announcement at the AWS ASEAN Summit held in Singapore marks Amazon's latest initiative in building AWS infrastructure in Southeast Asia.
Previously, the company announced an investment of $5 billion in Thailand and $6 billion in Malaysia in the past two years, both aimed at strengthening the local cloud service infrastructure.
Meet Southeast Asia
Southeast Asia has a young population of 670 million familiar with the technology industry, and as technology giants become increasingly interested in Southeast Asia, leaders of Southeast Asian countries are also vying for a larger share of the global technology industry.
Last December, NVIDIA CEO Huang Renxun visited Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore respectively; Last month, Apple CEO Tim Cook visited Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia in succession.
The utility division of Malaysian conglomerate YTL reached a partnership with Nvidia in December last year to develop artificial intelligence infrastructure for a $4.3 billion investment agreement.
After visiting Singapore last month, Cook plans to invest over $250 million in his business in Singapore.
A few days before Amazon announced this news, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also announced during his visit to the region that he would invest $2.2 billion and $1.7 billion respectively in building cloud service infrastructure in Malaysia and Indonesia.
In addition, Malaysian Trade Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz stated on Monday (May 6) that Google also plans to invest in Malaysia and is expected to announce it in the "near future".
