The Swedish Academy credited Foser with combining its strong linguistic and geographical ties to Norway with the modernist approach pioneered by writers such as Samuel Beckett, Thomas Bernhard and Georg Trakl. "While Foser shared the same negative views as his predecessors, it cannot be said that his uniquely Gnostic worldview led to a nihilistic contempt for the world," the Swedish Academy said. "In fact, there is a great deal of warmth and humor in his work, while his straightforward depictions of human experience are naive and vulnerable."
Foser is known for his minimalist style. The academy referred to his second novel, Stengd, written in 1985.
Jon Fosse won The Nobel Prize in literature "for his innovative drama and prose that express the ineffable experience of life."

Foser is known for his minimalist style. The academy pointed to his second novel, "Stengd gitar," written in 1985, about a young mother who accidentally locks herself out of her apartment while taking out the trash, with her infant child still inside. She should have gone to get help, but she couldn't leave, afraid to leave her children behind.
