After domestic new energy vehicle companies successively announced their September sales, BYD and Tesla's two giant report cards have also been unveiled.
On the evening of October 2, BYD was the first to announce that the sales volume of new energy vehicles in September reached 287,500, and the sales volume during the year has exceeded 2 million. However, Tesla's three quarterly reports were not satisfactory, but fell by 6.65% compared with the second quarter, only 435,100 vehicles, significantly lower than the 460,000 vehicle delivery expectations given by the agency.
It is worth noting that BYD nearly surpassed Tesla in the third quarter to become the "king of global pure electricity", which achieved sales of 431,600 pure electric vehicles in the third quarter, only slightly lower than Tesla's delivery of less than 3,500 vehicles in the third quarter.
Byd achieved nearly 70% of its annual target
Including An, ideal and other new energy vehicle companies have hit a new monthly sales and delivery record, "one brother" BYD is also "not willing to be lonely." On the evening of the 2nd, BYD announced in the Hong Kong Stock Exchange sales announcement in September, the month to achieve new energy vehicle sales of 287,500 units, 201,300 units in the same period last year, an increase of 42.8%.
From the annual point of view, BYD has achieved a cumulative sales of 2.0796 million new energy vehicles, an increase of 76.23%. According to the 3 million sales target set at the beginning of the year, BYD has completed nearly 70%. In the remaining three months, BYD needs to maintain an average monthly sales of more than 310,000 vehicles to achieve the target.
In fact, from May to July this year, BYD's monthly sales climbed from 240,000 units to 260,000 units, and in August, a new record was set again, reaching 274,400 units, an increase of 56.89% in the same month.
Since this year, BYD has landed multiple sub-brands in the market segment and launched new products at the same time. On the evening of September 20, the first product of BYD's look up brand, look up U8 luxury edition, was officially listed, and the listing price reached 1.098 million yuan. The model is positioned as a million-level new energy off-road vehicle, which is also an important step in exploring the high-end market.
On August 16, BYD released the personalized brand Equation Leopard and its exclusive technology DMO hybrid off-road platform. It is reported that BYD intends to use DMO models as a starting point to reshape hard SUV, sports car and other market rules. In late September, Equation Leopard's first model, Leopard 5, the first production car rolled off the assembly line.
Overseas sales continue to set new records
It is worth noting that BYD renewed overseas sales in September, reaching 28,000 vehicles, an increase of 262.4%. In fact, BYD's overseas sales were significantly stronger in the third quarter. Its overseas sales in May and June have been hovering at just over 10,000 units, but from July, overseas sales increased to 18,200 units, and the data significantly exceeded 25,000 units in August.
So far, BYD's overseas sales have reached 145,500 vehicles during the year. At the Munich Auto Show in early September, BYD was clearly the most eye-catching new energy vehicle company. Its booth area even exceeds that of the Mercedes-Benz booth in the same pavilion.
At the show, BYD introduced its sixth model in the European market, the SEAL U. This model is the BYD Song PLUS champion version for the domestic market, equipped with BYD blade batteries and offers two battery capacity models.
Before the launch of SEAL U, BYD's Han, Yuan PLUS (Atto 3), Tang models have been launched in the European market, the Dolphin model was also launched in July, and its Seal model was launched in September. In addition to the release of SEAL U, BYD's Denza D9 also debuted in the European market.
Byd recently revealed in institutional exchanges that it has entered 15 European countries in the past year, and has opened more than 140 stores in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and other countries.
Great Wall Securities believes that the acceptance of new energy vehicles in Western Europe, North America and other places is relatively low, and it is necessary to solve the problem of labor and employment placement related to original fuel vehicles. The agency believes that in the short term, China's new energy vehicle companies have a large space to expand in the Western European and North American markets, and can continue to make strength in Northern Europe.
In this context, car companies represented by BYD take three electric technology as the starting point and are overtaking fuel vehicles on corners to seek new growth points overseas.
Tesla delivered less than expected in the third quarter
At the same time that BYD announced its September sales, Tesla also announced its third-quarter delivery status in the early morning of Beijing time on the 3rd. Unlike BYD's sales continued to climb, Tesla's deliveries in the third quarter were significantly lower than market expectations.
Tesla delivered a total of 435,100 vehicles in the third quarter, below the 461,600 expected by Wall Street. Tesla delivered 419,100 Model 3/Y vehicles and 16,000 Model S/X vehicles.
On a year-on-year basis, Tesla's production and deliveries in the third quarter of 2022 were 365,900 and 343,800, up 17.6% and 26.5% in the third quarter of this year. But the third-quarter figure represents a significant drop from the second quarter of this year. It is understood that Tesla delivered 466,100 vehicles in the second quarter, compared to Tesla's third quarter delivery fell 6.65%.
Tesla explained that, as discussed in its recent earnings call, the decline was caused by the shutdown of planned factory upgrades. The company also said its 2023 vehicle sales target of about 1.8 million units remained unchanged.
In the first three quarters of this year, Tesla has delivered 1,324,100 vehicles, which also means that Tesla will deliver more than 475,900 vehicles in the last quarter to complete the task.
In fact, Tesla closed some of its factories this summer for upgrades. CEO Elon Musk has warned that this will cause a slowdown in production. In addition, as inflation continues to bite, it is getting harder for consumers to make big purchases.
In response to inflation and high interest rates, Tesla has been slashing prices all year. Tesla's best-selling Model Y currently starts at $50,490 in the U.S. market, compared to $65,990 in early 2023.
According to Tesla's website, it launched a new rear-drive version of the Model Y in the US market, replacing the previous all-wheel drive version. With a starting price of $43,990, the new car is already the cheapest Model Y on the market.
It is worth noting that BYD nearly replaced Tesla in the third quarter to become the king of the global pure tram. Byd sold 151,200 pure electric vehicles in September, up from 134,800 in July and 145,600 in August. In other words, BYD achieved a total of 431,600 pure electric vehicle sales in the third quarter, which is an increase of 23% from the second quarter.
Compared with Tesla's global vehicle deliveries of 439,100 in the third quarter, the gap between the two is less than 30,500 vehicles. In the second quarter of this year, Tesla delivered 466,100 vehicles, while BYD's pure electric sales were 352,200 vehicles, a gap of 113,900 vehicles.
