According to data from the Defective Product Management Center of the State Administration for Market Regulation, in January, a total of 9 recall notices were issued in China, involving a total of 2550965 passenger cars from 9 brands, a year-on-year increase of 732.61% and a month on month increase of 126.98%.
From the trend, the monthly recall scale of domestic passenger cars continues its high trend, not only breaking through one million vehicles for the third consecutive month, but also surpassing 2.55 million vehicles in one fell swoop, an increase of 126.98% month on month, becoming a new recall high since April 2021.
From the perspective of characteristics, in January, the concentration of recall brands for passenger cars was relatively high. Tesla recalled 1617643 passenger cars under a single brand, accounting for 63.41% of the total recall volume; Honda recalled 928812 vehicles, accounting for 36.41% of the total; The recall of other brands is less than 0.1% of the total amount.
Specifically, in January, Tesla released a recall of over 1.6176 million passenger cars, covering all of its imported and domestically produced car series sold in China.
Among them, the reason for the recall of 1610105 imported Model S, Model X, Model 3, and domestically produced Model 3, Model Y is that when the automatic steering assist function is activated, the driver may misuse the level 2 combination driving assist function, increasing the risk of vehicle collision and posing a safety hazard. In this regard, the company will promote newly developed features for vehicles within the recall scope through Remote Automotive Upgrade (OTA) technology, including the addition of additional automatic assisted steering control and related prompts, to further encourage drivers to fulfill their driving responsibilities and comply with driving regulations when using this function, in order to reduce the risk of collisions caused by misuse of the assisted steering function.
It is worth noting that about a month before this recall, Tesla also recalled 2.0312 million Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles in the US market due to the same hidden danger.
Tesla has experienced frequent large-scale recalls in recent years. In the Chinese market, Tesla also initiated recall cases with a scale of over one million vehicles in 2023, and ultimately recalled 1112331 passenger cars in 5 batches in 2023. In 2022, Tesla recalled a total of 791502 passenger cars in 6 batches, making it the brand with the highest number of recalls throughout the year and the first electric vehicle brand to reach the top of the annual recall list; In 2021, it also recalled 543811 passenger cars in 6 batches.
The Honda series, including Honda, Acura, and concept brands, has recalled 928812 passenger cars in two batches.
Among them, the reason for the recall of 520624 vehicles is that due to insufficient resin density in the fuel pump impeller, the impeller may experience swelling and deformation under the influence of fuel, and interfere with the fuel pump housing, resulting in poor operation of the fuel pump and inability to provide normal fuel to the engine. In extreme cases, it may cause the engine to stall while driving, posing a safety hazard. In this regard, the company will provide free replacement of improved fuel pumps for vehicles within the scope of recall.
This has also caused another stir in the stall gate incident. Since 2019, the "stall door" caused by fuel pump issues with electric installation has become the focus of the passenger car recall market. In 2020, up to 2741469 passenger cars were recalled in China due to this issue, accounting for 41.40% of the total recall volume for the year. In August 2023, 314746 passenger cars were recalled due to fuel pump issues.
In addition, in January, Honda also recalled 256092 hybrid models, including 169000 hybrid version CR-V and plug-in hybrid version CR-V, as well as 87092 hybrid version BREZE and plug-in hybrid version BREZE. The reason for the recall is due to a layout issue with the battery positive wire harness. When a collision occurs at a specific angle in the front left of the vehicle, the battery positive wire harness may be damaged, posing a risk of short circuit and fire. In this regard, the company will provide free replacement of the improved battery positive wire harness for vehicles within the recall scope to eliminate safety hazards.
Jaguar Land Rover, Volvo, and Dodge respectively recalled 1987, 1200, and 1143 imported models, accounting for 0.08%, 0.05%, and 0.04%, respectively. Mercedes Benz and Porsche from Germany have recalled 168 and 12 respectively. (China Economic Network reporter Guo Yue)
