Toyota Motor, the world's best-selling automaker, announced on Thursday that it has signed an agreement to adopt Tesla's electric vehicle charging technology starting from 2025.
This brings Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) closer to replacing its competitor, the Combined Charging System (CCS), as an industry standard.
Toyota will integrate the NACS port into certain Toyota and Lexus pure electric vehicles, including the new Toyota SUV to be assembled at its Kentucky manufacturing plant.
Starting from 2025, existing owners of Toyota and Lexus equipped with CCS will be able to use adapters to achieve NACS charging.
Toyota stated that the company is committed to providing a seamless charging experience, whether at home or in public places. Through the applications of Toyota and Lexus, customers can use a wide range of charging networks, including over 84000 charging ports in North America, and NACS provides users with more choices.
Further Unification of North America
BMW Group recently announced that it will begin adopting NACS in the United States and Canada in 2025. The agreement will cover BMW, MINI, and Rolls Royce electric models.
As of now, automakers such as Ford, General Motors, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Jaguar, Hyundai, Kia, and others have announced joining the Tesla NACS charging standard.
It is worth noting that Toyota is the third Japanese automaker to join Tesla's NACS camp after Nissan and Honda.
NACS has been used on all Tesla vehicles in the North American market since 2012 and will be open to other manufacturers in 2022. Currently, NACS has been widely used, with the US Department of Energy stating that they account for about 60% of fast chargers in the United States.
The CCS system has received support from car manufacturers, including Volkswagen, although the German car company has already negotiated with Tesla to adopt NACS.
