At CES 2024 held in Las Vegas, Qualcomm announced its major product upgrade - the Snapdragon XR2+Gen 2 chip, an AI chip for VR/MR devices.
In addition, Qualcomm continues its tradition on CES, showcasing the latest automotive technology and launching the Snapdragon Digital Chassis Platform, which enhances work and life efficiency in connected car services.
Qualcomm launches upgraded VR/MR chips
The Snapdragon XR2+Gen 2 is an upgraded version of Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 Gen2 launched in September last year. Compared to the previous generation, it has the following improvements: the resolution per eye is reduced from 3K × 3K increased to 4.3K × 4.3K; FPS increased to 90; Support increasing the number of integrated cameras from 10 to 12 or more at the same time; Supports Wi Fi 7, Wi Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and Bluetooth 5.2 connections.
Compared to Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, Snapdragon XR2+Gen 2 has a 15% increase in GPU frequency and a 20% increase in CPU frequency.
Hugo Swart, Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm XR, stated in a press release that this will help the Snapdragon XR2+Gen 2 provide a smoother "room level screen, human sized coverage, and virtual desktop.".
On January 10th local time, Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of Qualcomm, discussed the enterprise use cases of virtual reality, including providing a digital environment for training, in a keynote speech.
Samsung and Google have planned to use Snapdragon XR2+Gen 2 in their virtual reality products running on Android, which may eventually compete with Apple Vision Pro. The Snapdragon XR2+Gen 2 is currently competing with Intel's AI PC technology in the light equipment and automotive sectors, as well as Nvidia's semiconductors.
Qualcomm showcases Snapdragon digital chassis products
The second major announcement by Qualcomm at CES 2024 is about its Snapdragon digital chassis product portfolio. The platform provides empowerment for the next generation of generative AI, covering digital cockpit, Internet of Vehicles technology, Internet connected services, advanced driving assistance and auto drive system systems and other aspects.
Qualcomm's "next-generation digital cockpit that supports generative artificial intelligence" is used for edge generation artificial intelligence, which means that cars can run generative artificial intelligence applications to dynamically update information related to drivers on the road, depending on different brands and applications. Services and suggestions can be personalized, and applications can predict driver preferences and needs.
Nakul Duggal, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Automotive and Cloud Computing at Qualcomm, stated in a press release, "We are committed to driving the development of automotive technology to support global automakers, primary suppliers, and our ecosystem partners, which will help shape the future of software defined cars and accelerate our entry into a new era in the automotive industry."
