In 2023, Tesla's total market share in the United States surpassed Volkswagen for the first time, with sales increasing by a quarter year-on-year.
On Monday (January 8th), the US automotive research website Kelly Blue Book released car sales data for each manufacturer in 2023. Data shows that General Motors remains the best-selling car company in the United States, with a market share of 16.5% and annual sales of 2.5776 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 14.1%.
Toyota and Ford were at the top of last year's new car sales chart, followed by Hyundai, Stellantis, Honda, Nissan, Tesla, Volkswagen, and Subaru, all ranking in the top ten.
Tesla is gradually expanding its influence throughout the American automotive industry, with its annual car sales in the United States increasing by more than 25% compared to the previous year; It also gained a market share of 4.2%, ranking eighth.
Tesla's sales in the United States over the past year were 654800 vehicles, an increase of 25.4% from 522400 vehicles in 2022.
In 2022, Tesla's sales accounted for 3.8% of the US automotive market share, surpassing the market share of car manufacturers such as BMW, Mazda, and Daimler that year, ranking tenth at the time.
In 2023, Tesla's market share reached 4.2%, an increase of 0.4%. It has already surpassed Volkswagen and Subaru (both with market share of 4.1%), as well as established car manufacturers such as BMW, Mazda, and Daimler.
The other significant change on this list is that Honda's sales in the United States increased by 33% year-on-year, surpassing Tesla's 25%. In terms of year-on-year changes in sales, other car companies have surpassed Tesla, including Geely Volvo, Levian, and Lucid, but these companies rank lower in market share.
Next milestone
Analysts believe that considering Tesla's launch of new products in the United States this year, this strong performance is expected to continue throughout 2024.
Firstly, the Cybertruck released in November last year will supplement Tesla's growth in the United States in 2024;
Secondly, the upgraded version of Tesla's all electric sedan Model 3, the Highland, is expected to debut in the US market in the coming months;
In addition, Tesla is also expected to update the Model Y this year, and it is understood that the project is codenamed "Juniper", and the redesign may increase demand for the car.
Electric vehicle analyst Sawyer Merritt shared the latest data on social media X, and Musk responded half jokingly, "6.9% is the next milestone.".
