Tesla announced that the company has officially launched a new large-scale factory project in Shanghai with an annual production capacity of 10000 Megapack fixed battery banks. The land acquisition signing ceremony for the project was recently held in Shanghai, marking the official launch of the company's "milestone project". As Tesla's first energy storage super factory project outside the United States, the factory is scheduled to start construction in the first quarter of 2024 and commence production in the fourth quarter.
The Tesla Energy Storage Super Factory project is located in the Lingang New Area of Shanghai, near the Tesla Shanghai Super Factory. Tesla introduced that the Tesla Energy Storage Super Factory project will plan to produce ultra large commercial energy storage batteries (Megapacks) to supply the global market. Initially, the plan is to produce 10000 commercial energy storage batteries annually, with a storage capacity of nearly 40 gigawatt hours. It is reported that each Megapack unit can store over 3.9 megawatt hours of energy, which is approximately the hourly electricity demand of 3600 households, allowing for more efficient storage and distribution of renewable energy.
Tesla stated that in the development of energy storage products, Tesla's Shanghai super factory pays special attention to components highly related to environmental protection and safety, such as coolant pipelines, electronic components, thermal management systems, chemicals, etc., and will strictly select suppliers and control quality.
It is reported that Tesla's energy storage business is becoming its new growth driver. At present, Tesla's energy storage products have been distributed in over 65 countries and regions worldwide, with over 1500 operational sites. Among them, Megapack has been used in many places such as North America, Asia Pacific, and Europe to provide electricity supplementation and protection for the local area.
Tesla stated that energy storage is becoming one of the company's most profitable and promising businesses. The financial report shows that Tesla's energy storage deployment in the third quarter of this year was 4 gigawatt hours, a year-on-year increase of 90%, setting a record for the highest quarterly installed capacity; The revenue from the power generation and energy storage business was $1.559 billion, a 40% increase from $1.117 billion in the same period last year, and higher than the $1.509 billion in the previous quarter.
