According to media reports on Friday (December 8th), citing three insiders, chip giant Nvidia is in deep negotiations with YTL Group, owned by Malaysian tycoon Yang Zhongli, regarding a data center transaction. YTL Group's business includes various fields from the power industry to real estate.
One of the insiders stated that potential cooperation will include collaboration in cloud infrastructure, and the two parties may be based on YTL's data center located in Johor, southern Malaysia. Another insider revealed that the partnership will target Southeast Asian companies and provide them with computing power supported by Nvidia artificial intelligence chips through cloud computing.
As the discussion has not yet been made public, insiders have not disclosed their names. And it is currently unclear what the value of this transaction is.
This negotiation is not the first cooperation between the two sides. Earlier this year, Yes 5G, a subsidiary of YTL's telecommunications division, reached a cooperation agreement with Nvidia regarding cloud gaming. Under this collaboration, Nvidia's cloud gaming service GeForce NOW, supported by Yes 5G network technology, allows players to stream their favorite PC games directly from the cloud, eliminating the need for expensive hardware and long downloads.
Recently, foreign direct investment in Malaysia's semiconductor industry has significantly increased.
For example, Texas Instruments announced an investment of approximately $2.7 billion to build semiconductor packaging and testing plants in Kuala Lumpur and Malacca, Malaysia; Intel is building its latest packaging plant in Penang, Malaysia to strengthen its 2.5D/3D packaging layout; Micron Technology previously invested $1 billion to establish a new cutting-edge assembly and testing factory in Malaysia, which officially began operations in October this year.
Nvidia CEO Wong Yan hoon is scheduled to visit Malaysia on Friday after meeting with senior officials in Singapore earlier this week. The company has become the first chip manufacturer with a market value exceeding trillions of dollars in this year's wave of artificial intelligence.
