Some senators are targeting new targets at inheritance and donation preferences in the process of college enrollment and admission. After the Supreme Court recently ruled that considering racial factors in college admissions is illegal, the advantages given to certain students and groups are currently being increasingly examined.
Indiana Republican Senator Todd Young and Virginia Democratic Senator Tim Kaine proposed a bill on Tuesday called the MERIT Act, which will attempt to end the inheritance admission policies of universities. If this bipartisan legislation is implemented, it will add a new standard for qualification certification under the Higher Education Act, which will prohibit universities from granting preferential treatment based on applicants' relationships with alumni or donors during the enrollment process.
The prospects of this bill are still uncertain, but it highlights the high level of congressional attention to the issue of college enrollment.
