On Friday morning Beijing time, OpenAI held its debut of the "12 Days, 12 Live Streaming" event, which as expected brought a fully blooded version and advanced mode of the inference model o1, as well as a monthly subscription service for ChatGPT Pro that costs up to $200 (approximately RMB 1450).
Let's first talk about the o1 big model that the vast majority of people can use. After the live broadcast, ChatGPTPlus users have gradually started using the full version of the o1 model. The model was initially launched in September in the form of an O1 preview version. The characteristic of this type of model is that it does not "blurt out" when answering user questions, but forms an internal thinking chain similar to human thinking, thereby significantly improving the accuracy of answering professional questions.
In short, the just launched full version of the O1 model will be faster, more powerful, and more accurate than the preview version, while also adding the ability for multimodal input (which allows uploading images).
OpenAI stated that compared to the preview version, the current o1 model has been trained to be more concise in thinking (approximately 50% faster), and the probability of making significant errors when answering difficult real-world questions has been reduced by 34%.
In the demonstration, when answering "List the names, terms, and major achievements of 2nd century Roman emperors," the o1 model "thought" for 14 seconds, while the o1 preview took 34 seconds. By the way, GPT-4o with poorer abilities may make mistakes when answering this question.
Another important update of the o1 model is the support for image input. Now, when asking the model about "heat dissipation issues in space data centers," a hand drawn schematic can be attached. OpenAI plans to increase support for web browsing, file uploading, and other features in the coming months.
OpenAI also demonstrated that the o1 model (with a light red bar in the middle) has significantly higher accuracy in answering math, programming, and doctoral level scientific questions than the o1 preview version (orange on the left), and the green bar on the right has further improvement, which is the o1 Pro mode exclusively for ChatGPT Pro users.
ChatGPT Pro for $200 per month
ChatGPTPro is OpenAI's latest subscription tier, which is 10 times more expensive than ChatGPTPlus.
After spending $200 per month, users can use the o1 model indefinitely (the current limit for Plus users is 50 messages per week), as well as the o1 mini and advanced voice modes, and also the o1 pro mode.
The official definition states that o1 Pro will use more computing resources to delve deeper into thinking and provide the best answers to the most difficult problems. OpenAI will also add more powerful and computationally intensive features to this subscription tier in the future.
In short, if you are a scientific researcher or programmer and the reasoning ability of the O1 model is not sufficient to meet your needs, you can consider trying the "Krypton" advanced mode.
In the demonstration, OpenAI demonstrated that by setting a series of stringent conditions, o1 Pro can screen out proteins that meet the criteria.
In OpenAI's announcement, it was also mentioned that 10 medical researchers were given away free ChatGPT Pro, covering research areas such as orphan diseases, cancer, dementia, etc. This is probably also the demographic profile of the users of this subscription service.
At the end of the entire press conference, Altman also mentioned that there will be "great things for developers" in tomorrow's presentation, so Chinese investors waiting for Sora may not have to stay up late on Saturday, right?
