In the increasingly fierce artificial intelligence (AI) model competition, OpenAI's arch rival, AI unicorn company Anthropic, has once again received strong bets from technology giant Google.
Google announced on Wednesday (November 8th) an expansion of its partnership with AI security and research startup Anthropic.
As a major highlight of expanding cooperation between the two sides, Antiopic will run its large language model Claude on Google Cloud's Cloud TPU v5e chip.
Anthropic positioned its large language model Claude as a substitute for ChatGPT. The model has received significant investment from many supporters, including up to $4 billion from Amazon in addition to Google.
According to reports, Antiopic has also agreed to spend over $3 billion over four years to purchase Google's cloud computing services, which includes not only TPU chips but also other products. And at the end of last month, there were reports that Google agreed to invest up to $2 billion more in Antiopic.
What is the TPU v5e chip?
Cloud TPU v5e is the most functional, efficient, and scalable AI accelerator on Google Cloud to date. It can provide services for large language models in a more efficient manner.
The TPU series of chips debuted in 2016 as a machine learning chip developed internally by Google. The TPU v5e is the fifth iteration of TPU, which is 2.3 times faster than the fourth generation processor of the series.
Each TPU v5e includes four optimized calculation modules for performing matrix multiplication, which are mathematical operations used by AI models to convert user prompts into text and code outputs. In addition, TPU v5e also includes scalar and vector circuits that perform support calculations, as well as high-speed memory.
We are very excited about the efficiency of TPU. These are already beginning to bring us benefits, "said Dario Amodei, CEO of Antiopic
Close cooperation
Since its establishment in 2021, Anthropic has been closely collaborating with Google. At the beginning of this year, Google invested $550 million in Aerospace.
The company has established one of the largest Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) engine clusters in the industry. The company currently uses Google's fully hosted PostgreSQL compatible database, AlloyDB, to process transaction data; And use Google's BigQuery data warehouse to analyze a large number of datasets and extract information for its employees.
After this collaboration, Aerospace also became one of the first companies to deploy Cloud TPU v5e on a large scale.
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Gu Geyun, said, "The expanded partnership with Antiopic, built on years of cooperation, will bring AI security and reliability to more people. It also explains to the public how the most innovative and fastest-growing artificial intelligence startup company was established on Google Cloud
Google is not the "only" company of Antiopic
It is worth mentioning that Anthropic also has another 'gold owner' - Amazon. Amazon has reached an agreement with Anthropic to allow this startup to use its AWS cloud services and chips. And Anthropic also plans to "run most of its workload on AWS".
Antonopic's CEO Amodei explained that it is adopting a "multi cloud" approach, which means it will not collaborate exclusively with any supplier.
Kurian, the CEO of Gu Geyun, also expressed his understanding and stated that he would not be troubled by the cooperation between Antiopic and AWS, as large enterprises always want to choose multi cloud, which can help them utilize the best cloud among them.
