Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese arrived in Shanghai on Saturday (November 4th) and immediately met with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang on a four day state visit to China. Albanese stated that "I am delighted to be in Shanghai", and this historic visit represents the thawing of the long awaited relationship between China and Australia.
This is the first visit by an Australian leader to China in seven years, and Australia and China are looking forward to strengthening their bilateral relations after experiencing a diplomatic dispute that affects billions of dollars in trade.
Albanese posted photos of his arrival in China on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, "It's great to be in Shanghai. This is the first time an Australian Prime Minister has visited China since 2016. I look forward to continuing our dialogue between our two countries in the coming days
Albanese arrived at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport at around 6pm local time on Saturday and was welcomed by Australian Ambassador to China Graham Fletcher, Chinese Ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian, and Shanghai Vice Mayor Xie Dong. According to the on-site footage, a red carpet was laid on the apron and a little girl was arranged to present flowers for welcome.
Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported that Albanese arrived in Shanghai and immediately attended the welcome banquet hosted by Chinese Premier Li Qiang for the Shanghai Import Expo. We must cooperate with China wherever we can, express opposition when necessary, and we will also consider our national interests, "Albanese said after the banquet.
Albanese told accompanying media that engaging in a positive, constructive, respectful, and open dialogue with the largest trading partner is in Australia's national interest. "This is what I hope to achieve in the next few days.
Albanese is expected to stay in China for four days and will visit Shanghai and Beijing respectively. Albanese will attend the Shanghai Import Expo on the 5th and visit Australian corporate booths.
This visit follows Albanese 'visit to the United States. According to Agence France Presse, the Australian government is seeking to establish more friendly relations with its largest trading partner while also seeking to curb Beijing's growing influence in the Pacific region.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that a healthy and stable relationship between China and Australia is in the fundamental interests of both countries and their peoples. "China is willing to work with the Australian side to take this visit as an opportunity, in the spirit of mutual respect, seeking common ground while reserving differences, and mutual benefit, to strengthen communication, enhance mutual trust, expand cooperation, deepen friendship, and promote the continuous improvement and development of bilateral relations
China and Australia have a positive attitude towards the recovery of relations, which is completely different from the bilateral relations that have been deadlocked in recent years due to Australia's call to investigate the source of the COVID-19 epidemic and punitive tariffs. In order to add a friendly atmosphere, China previously released Australian journalist Cheng Lei, who was detained for three years on charges of espionage, and stated that it would accelerate the review of tariff measures on Australian wine.
On the eve of Albanese's visit, he said, "This is the result of our patient, calibrated, and cautious approach to our relationship with China
Despite the improvement in bilateral relations, Australian Chinese author Yang Hengjun, who has been accused of espionage by China since 2019, is still in prison. Yang Hengjun's son requested Albanese to express concern to the Chinese side and achieve a "miracle" for their father.
