Eu Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton sent a letter to Meta CEO Zuckerberg on Oct. 11 asking for swift action to stop the spread of disinformation related to the new Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Mr Breton said there had been a surge in illegal content and disinformation on some platforms after Hamas launched attacks on Israel. In view of the upcoming European Parliament and a series of elections in many countries, he also asked Zuckerberg to inform the EU about the steps being taken to reduce "deepfakes."
Breton asked Meta to respond within 24 hours, warning that "Meta may face penalties if found not to cooperate."
