Bletchley Park in the UK is holding a landmark artificial intelligence summit, where EU officials and experts in the field of artificial intelligence will gather to discuss how to develop safety standards for the artificial intelligence industry.
Nick Clegg, former Deputy Prime Minister of the UK and current Global Affairs President of Meta, expressed his attitude in advance of the summit opening, calling for premature regulation of artificial intelligence technology.
He emphasized that the detractors intend to elevate the issue of artificial intelligence security to a level that everyone cannot accept, and then intervene in regulation to gain initiative.
He also mentioned that radio, bicycles, and the internet have all caused moral panic. Ten years ago, when the concept of autonomous driving was introduced, people were threatened that there would be no truck drivers because all cars would be fully automated. But the reality is that the United States is currently facing a shortage of truck drivers.
The key to regulation
The debate on AI risk in the field of artificial intelligence has entered a heated stage, with leaders from all walks of life stepping down, bringing the hidden concerns of AI security to a new forefront. However, behind the scenes, the leaders still sympathize with each other, claiming that academic disputes do not harm friendship.
In addition to Clegg, computer scientist and Google Brain co founder Wu Enda, as well as Meta's chief artificial intelligence scientist LeCun, have expressed the risk of artificially exaggerating AI risks and pointed out that this is one of the means used by large technology companies to monopolize artificial intelligence.
LeCun stated that some leaders in the technology industry do have an unfounded sense of superiority, leading them to believe that they can do AI but the public cannot, and that the emergence of super artificial intelligence is just around the corner, possessing all the characteristics of a law master's degree graduate, that is, knowing the law and being able to abide by it.
Geoffrey Hinton, known as the godfather of artificial intelligence, responded that his concerns were not from the perspective of a large company, and his departure from Google was the best proof.
But Hinton admits that he does prefer to see a few companies mastering artificial intelligence technology to facilitate regulatory implementation. He likened artificial intelligence to nuclear weapons, stating that public sharing of nuclear weapons may not necessarily make the world safer. It is always better for a few large institutions to possess this technology than for bad people to possess it, and so is artificial intelligence.
Upon closer examination of the viewpoints of both factions, it is not difficult to find that the key to solving this problem is perhaps whether to open up and open source the formulation of regulatory rules for artificial intelligence.
However, the heated debate among experts about AI risks cannot change the main tone of the UK summit. On Wednesday, representatives from 28 countries including China and the United States agreed to work together to curb the catastrophic risks brought about by the rapid development of artificial intelligence.
