Tesla shareholders oppose the exorbitant $7.2 billion in legal fees. Tesla's legal team stated in court on July 8th that the demand for the company to pay over $7 billion in legal fees is "extremely outrageous.". Three law firms representing investor Richard Tonita filed this fee claim. Tonita filed a lawsuit against Tesla in 2018 over Musk's stock option compensation plan. In January of this year, Delaware ruled in favor of Tonita, and Musk's $56 billion compensation plan was declared invalid at the time. Toneta's lawyer stated that they should receive a fee equivalent to 11% of the ruling, which can be considered conservative according to Delaware's legal precedent. They are requesting payment in the form of 29 million Tesla shares. According to Tesla's stock price last Friday, this lawyer fee is approximately $7.2 billion (approximately RMB 52.519 billion), equivalent to approximately $370000 per hour for each lawyer, assistant lawyer, and legal assistant.
