Microsoft acquired a data center development site located in Johor, Malaysia for a price of MYR 402.3 million (approximately USD 85.5 million) this week. The plot covers an area of 123.1 acres (49.8 hectares) and the transaction will be made in two installments, expected to be completed in the second half of 2025. Malaysian real estate company Eco World disclosed in a stock statement that Microsoft Payments, a subsidiary of Microsoft Malaysia, will purchase the land for the development of data centers and other ancillary facilities.
This acquisition is Microsoft's largest single investment in Malaysia to date, and it is also part of its commitment last month to invest $2.2 billion in Malaysia over the next four years to support the country's digital transformation. This region is one of the hottest server hosting centers in Asia. At the same time, ByteDance also plans to increase investment in Malaysia, expand data centers and build artificial intelligence centers.
As global technology giants increase their investment in Malaysia, the country is gradually becoming one of the important participants in the Asian data center and artificial intelligence fields. This trend is expected to further promote Malaysia's digital transformation and economic development.
