According to reports, Meta Platform CEO Zuckerberg has established a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Product Advisory Committee, which will regularly meet with the Meta management team and provide guidance on artificial intelligence and advanced technology.
It is reported that the committee will be composed of four executives: Patrick Collison, CEO and co-founder of online payment service provider Stripe, Nat Friedman, former CEO of online software source code custody service platform GitHub, Tobi L ü tke, CEO of multinational e-commerce company Shopify, and former Microsoft executive Charlie Songhurst.
A spokesperson for Meta confirmed that none of these four individuals will receive compensation. And the Meta consulting group will be different from the board of directors because its members are not elected by shareholders and they have no fiduciary responsibility to the company.
"The task of this consulting group is to provide insights and recommendations on opportunities for technological progress, innovation, and strategic growth," the spokesperson said in a statement.
Revitalize the "AI style"
Zuckerberg wrote in an internal notice to employees, "I have great respect for this group of people and their achievements in their respective fields. I am grateful that they are willing to share their views with Meta at this important moment when we seize new opportunities using artificial intelligence and the virtual world."
At the establishment of the team, Meta is seeking to revitalize its AI focused products. These products include hardware devices such as Quest virtual reality headphones and Ray Ban smart glasses, as well as software products such as Meta's artificial intelligence assistant, which the company is providing to consumers through several of its applications.
Zuckerberg told investors during Meta's earnings conference call last month that the company will increase capital expenditures and increase efforts in artificial intelligence development this year.
Previously, he stated at the end of April, "We have become more optimistic and ambitious about artificial intelligence. We have proven that we can build leading models and become a global leader in artificial intelligence. This brings us many additional opportunities, not just those that are most obvious to us."
The CEO also urged investors to remain patient and pointed out that many of the company's artificial intelligence efforts will not immediately generate economic returns. In the competition to develop artificial intelligence models that can support the next generation of technology products, the company faces competitors including Alphabet Inc.'s Google, Microsoft, and its partner OpenAI, as well as startup company Aerospace.
It is currently unclear how often the product consulting group will hold a meeting, but Zuckerberg stated that the group will "regularly" provide advice to Meta's management team.
