Eastern time on October 4, Google held a "made by Google" (made by Google) event in New York, released the Pixel series of new phones, watches and Bluetooth headset hardware, as well as the latest Android 14 system.
You know, "Made by Google" was originally a hardware conference held once a year by Google, but the focus this time is not hardware, but generative AI!
Specifically, Google is arming AI into many of the basic functions of mobile phone everyday use. For example, many people like to take photos with their mobile phones, but when you take group photos, there are always people who do not do a good job, some eyes closed, some serious expression.
Google has implanted an AI image editing function "Magic Editor" in the photo function, which allows you to choose any person and change the expression with one click, so that you don't have to reshoot all the time. The feature can also be used to change lighting and backgrounds, such as changing gray skies to dusk.
In addition, Google has introduced "Zoom Enhance," an image enhancement function that uses generative AI to automatically add details to the image, allowing users to zoom in at will.
Dina Berrada, director of product management at Google Photos, said they will also add more generative AI features to image editing, in other words, AI will change the experience of taking photos on a phone.
In addition to taking photos, people will also use mobile phones to take videos and recordings, Google has developed AI sound modification tool "Audio Magic Eraser", can reduce the video useless noise, such as wind or noisy voices. Users can also use the AI Video enhancement feature "Video Boost" to adjust the color, light, stability and graininess of the video.
In addition, they have also implanted some regular generating AI word processing functions, such as generating web pages, reading and translating web pages, etc. In the future, they will launch the AI Assistant "Assistant with Bard", which can automatically generate social media copy based on the pet dog photos taken by users. You can also read emails, make travel plans, edit text messages, and so on.
In other words, basic functions such as taking photos, video, recording, browsing the web, and sending messages that people often use on their mobile phones have been transformed by generative AI.
Moreover, Google has also specially equipped the Tensor G3 chip for the new AI function, which integrates machine learning algorithms directly into the chip, so that AI calculations can be completed directly on the mobile side, without waiting for the cloud calculation results.
So, what industry trends does this portend, and what new opportunities lurk?
It can be expected that in the future, all applications on smart phones will be AI, and mobile phones will become veritable artificial smart phones.
This reminds me of a few years ago, someone shouted that mobile phones will die out in five years, I have publicly expressed my opinion, mobile phones not only will not die out, its role will be more powerful. Just like the earliest Pad was defined as PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), I define the future mobile phone as PIA (Personal Intelligent Assistant), now look, The phone is becoming everyone's smart assistant.
In fact, Google has made a leading exploration, although some functions are still in the warm-up stage, but Android as the largest underlying operating system in the field of smart phones, will drive Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, VIVO and other manufacturers to make similar updates.
Moreover, the mobile phone hardware is also preparing for AI applications, not only Google has upgraded the Tensor G3 chip, Apple's A17 PRO chip has also strengthened the AI computing power, Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen3 chip will also be equipped with the latest Hexagon hexagon processor, which aims to efficiently handle various AI tasks.
This means that mobile operating systems and hardware are initially ready for generative AI, and we will usher in a big boom in AI applications.
In the future, applications without AI will fall behind and become antique level applications of the previous era, just like launching functional machines in the era of mobile Internet.
However, from the point of view of the mobile AI applications released by Google, most of them are performance enhancements of the original functions, and the mobile applications released by AI companies such as OpenAI only copy or simplify the functions of the web side, and I believe that there will be more and more AI enhanced applications based on traditional functions in the future.
But the problem is that AI enhancements are likely to benefit traditional giants, while entrepreneurs will need to create entirely new applications in order to take advantage.
You know, after upgrading from the Internet to the mobile Internet, a lot of unprecedented application forms were born, and even gave birth to a lot of new industries, such as map services based on mobile Internet and satellite communication, taxi services, and convenient and fast delivery services, etc., in the process also gave birth to many new star enterprises, such as Didi, Meituan and so on.
Fortunately, there are no similar new application models in the field of generative AI, and true AI native applications are still in gestation. In other words, whether it is a traditional Internet factory or a new startup company, they are standing on the same starting line, and this is precisely the huge opportunity in the field of generative AI.
But the key is that the thinking of creating AI native applications may be completely different from traditional applications, and at the beginning of the project, generative AI should be regarded as the core driving force of the application, and then integrate other functions to create a new application form.
However, the beginning of everything is to become an early user of AI, interact with it for a long time, form their own unique understanding and insight of AI, and find a matching market demand on this basis, it is possible to create highly valuable AI native applications.
We have always emphasized that technology is a tank, and the key is to blitz. Google's efforts will put tanks in each of our hands, and the first people to blitz on them, designing new applications based on the phone's new intelligent processing power and gaining widespread acceptance, will be the biggest winners in the future. In other words, in the next two or three years, it is expected to give birth to the future of Google, Facebook, and BAT.
