According to the State Administration for Market Regulation on the evening of August 6th, Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. and Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. have recently filed a recall plan with the State Administration for Market Regulation in accordance with the requirements of the "Regulations on the Management of Defective Automobile Product Recalls" and the "Implementation Measures for the Regulations on the Management of Defective Automobile Product Recalls". Starting today, a total of 1683627 imported Model S, Model X, and domestically produced Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles with production dates between October 15, 2020 and July 17, 2024 will be recalled.
On August 7th, Tesla China officials told the Shanghai Stock Exchange reporter that Tesla has no further response regarding the recall content.

In extreme cases, it may affect the driver's field of vision
The recall announcement states that the reason for Tesla's recall this time is that after the front trunk lid is unlocked, the front trunk latch assembly system may not be able to detect that the front trunk lid is in an unlocked state, and the vehicle may not be able to issue a "front trunk not locked" prompt. In extreme cases, this may cause the front trunk lid to be lifted while the vehicle is in motion, affecting the driver's vision and increasing the risk of collision, posing a safety hazard.
In response, Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. and Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. will provide free software upgrades for vehicles within the recall scope through remote over the air (OTA) technology. The upgraded vehicles will be able to recognize the fault status of the front trunk latch and issue a text and beep prompt saying "Front trunk not locked". At the same time, free repairs will be provided to vehicles that have been found to have faults with the front trunk latch during testing to eliminate safety hazards.
Previously, due to the same hidden danger, Tesla also launched a large-scale recall in the US market, involving nearly 1.85 million vehicles. In addition, in the first half of 2024, Tesla also initiated a single recall of over 1.6 million vehicles in the Chinese market.
Tesla has experienced frequent large-scale recalls in recent years. In the Chinese market, Tesla initiated a recall of over one million vehicles in 2023, and ultimately recalled 1112331 passenger cars in five batches. In 2022, Tesla recalled a total of 791502 passenger cars in six batches, making it the brand with the most recalls of the year and the first electric vehicle brand to top the annual recall list. In 2021, Tesla also recalled 543811 passenger cars in six batches. However, industry experts also indicate that timely recalls and proper resolution of issues are responsible behaviors of car companies.
Tesla's Shanghai factory sees a rebound in shipments
In July 2024, Tesla's Shanghai factory saw a rebound in shipments after a 4-month hiatus. According to preliminary data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in July, Tesla's domestic sales of Model 3 and Model Y (including domestic and export sales) increased by 15.3% year-on-year, reaching 74117 units; The month on month growth also reached 4.4%. In terms of vehicle performance, Tesla Model Y is expected to continue leading the domestic passenger car market, with the delivery volume of Tesla Model 3 reaching the highest in the history of Shanghai Super Factory delivery.
Compared to the continuous decline in previous months, Tesla's performance in the Chinese market showed a trend of recovery in July. However, Tesla's current production speed in China is still lower than the first seven months of 2023.
In July, Tesla's main competitor BYD's sales of new energy passenger vehicles in the Chinese market increased by 30.5% year-on-year, reaching a monthly high of 340799 units, mainly due to the strong performance of Wangchao and Haiyang.com. In the first seven months of this year, Tesla's total wholesale sales of domestically produced cars were 500740 units, a decrease of 7.4% compared to the same period last year. In contrast, BYD's total sales of new energy passenger vehicles increased by 29% year-on-year during the same period.
In addition, Ideal Auto also stated that driven by the hot sales of its extended range electric vehicles, its car sales in July were 51000 units, an increase of nearly 50% compared to the same period in 2023, and a month on month increase of 6.8%.
Tesla China officials told reporters that Tesla is actively promoting its localization production strategy. Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory, relying on China's well-established supply chain system and first-class "Chinese intelligent manufacturing" capabilities, has become the world's most efficient vehicle factory, achieving an average production time of over 30 seconds for a complete vehicle. The improvement of production efficiency has led to a decrease in manufacturing costs.
Recently, Tesla welcomed the global production of its 10 millionth electric drive system, marking its first milestone of 10 million. Compared to the first generation Model S, the cost of the current electric drive system has been reduced by half.
