As one of Microsoft's major moves in its AI (Artificial Intelligence) products this year, the AI assistant Copilot will be officially integrated into Windows 11. In addition, Microsoft is also about to launch the enterprise version of Microsoft 365 Copilot.
On October 31st, Eastern Time, Microsoft announced the launch of a major update version "23H2" for the Windows 11 PC operating system. The new version will officially connect to the AI (Artificial Intelligence) chat robot called Copilot, and implement or upgrade various tools equipped with AI technology such as video editing, drawing, screen reading, and screenshots.
Since September 26th of this year, Microsoft has gradually launched the Copilot experience in the Windows 11 operating system. Windows Copilot can perform operating system functions and answer user questions by connecting to the network. Similar to ChatGPT of AI giant OpenAI, Copilot can generate text and other content that is similar to human language style based on user input prompts.
According to the images on Microsoft's website, Copilot will appear as a sidebar on the right side of the computer screen, the same way as opening Cortana in Windows 10. Users can click on the Copilot icon in the taskbar or use the "Win+C" shortcut key on the keyboard to open their program panel.
According to Microsoft, the current features of Windows Copilot include opening applications, switching to dark mode, and enabling Bluetooth. When users use Edge browser, Copilot can summarize the content on the page for them. According to foreign media reports, compared to the Siri Assistant on Apple's Mac, Windows Copilot provides users with more detailed answers.
Since the beginning of this year, perhaps thanks to spending a lot of money becoming the largest shareholder of OpenAI, Microsoft has made continuous actions in the AI field. In February of this year, Microsoft implanted the chat robot Bing AI into its search engine Bing. A month later, Microsoft launched the Microsoft 365 Copilot, incorporating the capabilities of the large language model GPT-4 into Office software.
In addition, to help Microsoft maintain its leading advantage in introducing AI in office tools, according to Microsoft's earlier announced plan, the Microsoft 365 Copilot Enterprise Edition will be officially launched on November 1st, with a monthly subscription fee of $30 (approximately RMB 219).
Similar to the Consumer version of Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot Enterprise Edition also helps users complete a series of office tasks by obtaining enterprise data. Microsoft Vice President Jared Spataro has stated that by using AI technology, the Enterprise Copilot can perform most of the tasks completed by enterprise assistants, such as summarizing video calls, writing email response drafts, and converting Word documents into PowerPoint presentations. According to foreign media reports, before the release of Copilot Enterprise Edition, some companies' Chief Information Officers (CIOs) had already begun evaluating whether the role of Copilot Enterprise Edition could match its high subscription prices.
A week ago, Microsoft released its first quarter results for the 2024 fiscal year ending September 30, showing a revenue of $56.517 billion, higher than market expectations of $54.545 billion, a year-on-year increase of 13%. The personal computing department, which includes Windows operating system licensing, hardware devices, games, and search advertising, had a revenue of $13.67 billion in the first quarter, a year-on-year increase of 3%. Among them, the Windows operating system licensing revenue increased by 4% year-on-year, ending five consecutive quarters of year-on-year decline.
Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said in the financial report, "Through Copilots (AI assistants), we are bringing individuals and businesses from around the world into the AI era. We are rapidly injecting AI into every layer of the technology stack, as well as every position and business process, to improve customer productivity and profitability
According to data from StatCounter, an analysis company, Windows 10 still holds almost 72% of the personal computer market share, while Windows 11 accounts for about 24%. After Microsoft ends its support for Windows 10 in October 2025, it is estimated that the market share of Windows 11 will increase. Previously, it was reported that Microsoft will launch a new operating system, Windows 12, next year and make more changes to its design for AI.
