"Mixed office has made my dual city life effortless, saving a lot of travel time, improving work efficiency, and balancing family needs well." Li Xiaoping, the business manager of Ctrip's large accommodation business group, is a workplace mother who commutes between Taicang, Jiangsu and Shanghai every day. Since Ctrip launched the "mixed office" policy in 2022, she has applied for mixed office more than 70 times, saving about 200 hours of commuting time.
On February 14, 2022, Ctrip announced the implementation of the "3+2" hybrid office model, which plans to allow employees to choose their own office locations on Wednesdays and Fridays starting from March 1. The new policy will cover all 30000 employees of the group, with no gender distinction, no job value, or salary adjustment.
Nowadays, Ctrip's hybrid office model has been implemented for 2 years. Data shows that in the past two years, seven members of the team, like Li Xiaoping, have experienced the convenience brought by mixed work, saving a total of about 700000 hours of commuting time. Among them, some employees have applied for mixed office work 167 times, becoming the "spokesperson" for the system. The proportion of female applicants is slightly higher, with young people preferring mixed office work, with nearly 80% of those born in the 1990s and 2000s.
It is reported that as a representative of Ctrip's "family friendly" enterprise development strategy, the mixed office policy has benefited more families with children. 63% of "fathers" and 58% of "mothers" have applied for mixed office.
The post-90s and post-00s have become the absolute mainstay of mixed office work
The post-90s generation prefer flexible hybrid office models. According to Ctrip data, hybrid office has a clear appeal to young employees, with the post-90s and post-2000s becoming the main force of hybrid office, accounting for nearly 80%, of which 21% are team managers. More than 80% of employees who apply for mixed office work choose to work from home on Fridays. In addition, one out of every four applicants chooses to work from home on both Wednesday and Friday.
Ctrip data also shows that through overall performance observation, these young people's work efficiency has not been significantly affected, and some people's focus and work efficiency still have improvement.
The integration of work and daily life has enabled more and more young people to transform into "time management masters". They advocate flexibility and efficiency, and their homes, cafes, and fast food restaurants can all be transformed into office spaces. The mixed office policy allows young people to be more satisfied in improving efficiency, flexibly controlling time, and enhancing their sense of belonging to the enterprise.
Families with children prefer mixed office work
In the second year of implementing the mixed office system, more and more families have benefited from it. According to Ctrip data, the rate of fathers among applicants is slightly higher than that of mothers, accounting for 63% and 58% respectively. This policy is helping families with children better balance their work and parenting needs.
Meanwhile, according to data from Ctrip, the proportion of female applicants for this system is gradually increasing, an increase of nearly 9% compared to last year. Among active employees who apply for mixed office work every week, women account for 59%.
Chen Yanting is a data analyst and also a mother born in 1995. Working in a mixed office environment reduces the pain of carrying milk and makes her work more flexible. "I prefer an undisturbed way of working. After regular breastfeeding, I go downstairs to the nearby caf é. My work efficiency doesn't decrease, and I also take care of my children."
"I used to spend more time on commuting, which allowed me to sleep in and get into work more efficiently." Li Xin, the product manager of Ctrip's air ticket business group, lives in Xinchang, Shanghai, with a one-way commuting time of nearly 1.5 hours. After the release of the mixed office system, her commuting time has been greatly reduced, adding one hour of sleep time per day, even saving "cosmetics". In 2023, she also received a promotion to become a team leader.
Employee commuting time saved 700000 hours
The social effects of mixed office are emerging. During the two years since the launch of hybrid office, it has saved employees over 700000 hours of commuting time and facilitated their home purchases. Li Xiaoping, the business manager of Ctrip's large accommodation business group, bought a house and settled in Taicang City. Ma Lan, the product manager of the air ticket business group, who participated in the first batch of hybrid office experiments in 2021, has upgraded her future home purchase plan from "old broken small" to "new big".
The person in charge of human resources at Ctrip introduced that while ensuring work efficiency, Ctrip's hybrid office has received support from employees and supervisors, and its attractiveness to talent is increasing. Employees can work across cities or countries, and the constraints of offline offices are being lifted, attracting more outstanding talents to join. At the same time, the employee turnover rate has also significantly decreased.
As the initiator and researcher of the hybrid office project, Liang Jianzhang, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ctrip Group, once said, "Promoting hybrid office is a win-win situation for enterprises, employees, and society. It not only improves employee satisfaction without affecting efficiency, but also helps reduce traffic congestion, environmental protection, alleviate high housing prices and regional differences, promote family harmony, women's career development, and increase fertility rates."
"We adhere to the people-oriented management philosophy, constantly improving the level of enterprise management, driving employee satisfaction and increasing the attractiveness of enterprise talents. In the future, we will continue to promote Ctrip's' family friendly 'strategy, creating greater value for society." said Sun Jie, CEO of Ctrip Group.
It is reported that Ctrip has previously introduced a 1 billion yuan maternity subsidy, which has now been enjoyed by over 240 second-generation "Cheng", promoting Ctrip to become a globally leading "family friendly" enterprise.
