On August 8th, in response to reports that HP will transfer half of its personal computer production from China, HP issued a statement denying the reports and emphasizing that China is an indispensable and critical part of HP's global supply chain. The company is firmly committed to operating and developing in China.
HP stated that its PC manufacturing business still holds a pivotal position in China, providing high-quality products and services to the global market. To further enhance the resilience of our supply chain, we are actively optimizing our strategies and increasing flexibility to better serve global customers and meet their diverse needs.
Previously, foreign media reported that HP is seeking to shift more than half of its personal computer (PC) production out of China. Currently, it is in negotiations with suppliers and plans to achieve this goal within two to three years, with the ultimate goal of producing 70% of laptops outside of China.
HP's PC production base in China is mainly located in Chongqing. As the first computer brand to settle in Chongqing, HP not only established a laptop production base in Chongqing, but also invested in HP (Chongqing) R&D center, and supported industrial chain enterprises such as Guangda and Yingyeda to carry out intelligent transformation in Chongqing, building a number of digital factories and digital workshops.
According to a previous report by Chongqing Daily, on September 20, 2023, HP held a celebration event for the production of its 400 millionth "Made in Chongqing" HP computer in Chongqing, and signed a cooperation agreement with Chongqing to jointly promote the construction of the Western Land Sea New Corridor, the Chengdu Chongqing Dual City Economic Circle, and the national logistics hub city, helping Chongqing's open economic development and the construction of the "33618" modern manufacturing industry cluster.
At this event, Ernest Nicholas, Chief Supply Chain Officer of HP, stated that HP will continue to use Chongqing as its main production base globally, focusing on cutting-edge technology and industrial development, continuously deepening its layout in Chongqing, and jointly achieving high-quality development.
HP is a major global supplier of personal PCs. According to data from third-party organization IDC, in the second quarter of 2024, a total of 64.9 million PCs were shipped globally, including desktop, laptop, and workstation sub channels and end-user shipments, a year-on-year increase of 3%, which is twice the growth rate of the first quarter. Among the top five global PC manufacturers, Lenovo shipped 14.7 million units in the second quarter, maintaining its top position in terms of shipment volume, with a year-on-year increase of 3.7%; HP ranked second with 13.7 million units shipped, with a 1.8% increase in shipments; Dell, ranked third, shipped 10.1 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 2.4%.
