The news outside the venue of the Paris Olympics continues to be continuous. After the railway sabotage attack on the day of the opening ceremony, on Monday, French police reported new riots in six regions of France, with multiple telecommunications operators' fiber optic networks being damaged.
On Monday, train services on the French railway network resumed normal, but the telecommunications infrastructure encountered problems. Marina Ferrari, the Secretary of State for Digital Affairs of France, stated that due to damage in multiple areas on Sunday night, there was a partial interruption in the French telecommunications network.
She added that there may be local issues with fiber optic cables, fixed line telephones, and mobile services, and relevant operators are working hard to fix them. She strongly condemns this cowardly and irresponsible behavior.
At present, there is no evidence to suggest a connection between railway incidents and fiber optic damage.
The shadow of the far left
According to the French police, after several days of railway network paralysis, they arrested a far left activist at a station of the national railway operator SNCF. He is being detained and interrogated by the police in Rouen, Normandy region, France.
According to sources, the man was detained in Oissel, northern France last Sunday, and keys to SNCF technology facilities, as well as information and tools related to the far left, were found on him.
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin stated in an interview that his department has identified information on several individuals involved in the railway attack. These deliberate and highly precise actions are usually associated with far left activists. But he did not specify the specific political party and group, nor did he provide concrete evidence.
Prior to the opening of the Olympics, due to the chaotic National Assembly elections in France and President Macron's inability to form a government dominated by left-wing forces, far left protesters publicly warned that they would plan actions during the Olympics to express their dissatisfaction with the government.
But so far, no organization has claimed responsibility for the destruction of French railways and other disruptive actions.
French Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete further pointed out that the damage could result in losses of up to millions of euros, including commercial losses and repair costs.
French prosecutors announced later on Monday that they will investigate multiple attacks on telecommunications facilities, and counter-terrorism investigators will work together with the French National Police Force.
The involvement of counter-terrorism investigators is likely due to the data breach involved in this incident, and the French counter-terrorism department has experience in investigating cyber attacks.
