Elon Musk plans to abandon the use of mobile communication and replace it with social media platform X.
On February 9th local time, he posted on "X" stating, "In a few months, I will cancel my phone number and only use" X "to send and receive messages, make audio and video calls."
Musk's approach can be seen from past operations. Since acquiring social media platform Twitter for $44 billion on October 27, 2022, Musk has repeatedly expressed his desire to create a 2.0 version of Twitter, a comprehensive application that includes encrypted private messages, long tweets, and payment functions.
In May 2023, Musk tweeted, "Voice and video chat functions will soon be launched, allowing you to chat with anyone on the platform through your account, so you can chat with people from anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number."
According to Daily Economic News on December 16, 2023, on December 14, 2023 local time, according to Reuters, Musk's social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) obtained a remittance license from the 13th state in the United States, taking a step closer to providing payment functionality. According to a public permit database, Pennsylvania has approved this decision. This license paves the way for X to allow users to transfer money to each other, similar to Venmo, a mobile payment service under PayPal. Other states that have issued remittance licenses to X include Arizona, Georgia, Wyoming, and Maryland.
Aaron Klein, a senior researcher at the Brookings Institution specializing in financial technology and regulation, said that in order to provide payment services to users across the United States, X needs to obtain approval from each state, a process that can take up to 18 months and cost millions of dollars.
