Red Star Capital Bureau reported on July 10th that today, CEO He Xiaopeng of Xiaopeng Motors (09868. HK/XPEV. US) revealed on Weibo about the new car model: a brand new product or named P7+; The product size exceeds 5 meters; P7+is the culmination of Xiaopeng's technology over the past decade.
Xiaopeng Motors has informed Red Star Capital that the P7+adopts an intelligent driving solution without LiDAR, and according to current Xiaopeng's technology, both with Tesla FSD are end-to-end and purely visual solutions. "Although various car companies are doing it, only the Xiaopeng P7+should be able to compete with FSD."
In terms of price, the naming, size, and technology of P7+are all above P7, and it is expected that the price will not be lower than P7 (209900-339900 yuan). The new car will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year.
Recently, it was reported by the media that Xiaopeng Motors will abandon LiDAR and adopt a pure visual intelligent assisted driving solution similar to Tesla in its new model launched in the fourth quarter. Tesla CEO Musk responded with three points in the comments section: "...".
Musk has always been critical of LiDAR, believing that it is expensive and unnecessary, and has repeatedly stated that Tesla will adhere to a purely visual solution. Tesla's assisted driving system never used LiDAR, and later eliminated millimeter wave radar and ultrasonic radar, with only cameras as sensors.
Xiaopeng Motors has previously adopted a LiDAR intelligent driving solution. Automotive industry analyst Liu Hao told Red Star Capital Bureau that domestic car companies generally use fusion sensing systems, which combine multiple sensors such as LiDAR, ultrasonic radar, millimeter wave radar, and high-definition cameras to achieve advanced intelligent driving functions. However, with the application of end-to-end, visual language modeling and other technologies, Tesla has proven the feasibility of pure visual solutions, and Xiaopeng Motors, Huawei, Ideal Motors (02015. HK/LI. US) and others have also begun to explore pure visual solutions.
In addition, pure visual solutions also have significant advantages in the hardware cost of intelligent driving. At present, the cost of one LiDAR is around $500.
At the first quarter financial report conference call on May 21, 2024, He Xiaopeng stated that the Xiaopeng brand will begin delivering a new B-class all electric sedan in the fourth quarter of this year, which is the first model to achieve a 25% reduction in technical costs.
