On October 6, local time, the survey results released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan showed that due to the continuous inflation, the real income of working families declined, and the real household consumption of Japan in August fell for 6 consecutive months compared with the same period in real terms.
According to the survey, the average consumption expenditure of Japanese households with two or more people in August was about 293,200 yen, a real decrease of 2.5% year-on-year.
In terms of actual spending, seven of the 10 consumer categories covered by the survey saw a year-on-year decline in spending. Among them, affected by the decline in spending on fish and shellfish and meat, food spending decreased for 11 consecutive months, which was the main reason for dragging down consumption.
The survey also showed that the average income of households with two or more employees fell by 6.9% year-on-year in real terms. Experts say it is difficult to expect real consumption to increase at a time when real household income continues to decline.
