OpenAI, the developer behind this year's viral ChatGPT, is exploring making its own artificial intelligence (AI) chip and has begun evaluating a potential acquisition target, according to sources. According to people familiar with the matter, the company has discussed various options since at least last year to address the shortage of expensive AI chips on which OpenAI relies. Those options include making your own AI chips, working more closely with other chipmakers, including Nvidia, and diversifying suppliers beyond Nvidia.
