On December 29, Nvidia officially launched the GeForce RTX 4090 D game graphics card for the Chinese Mainland market. This product is in response to the latest US export control measures against China in October 2023, and has been downgraded based on the original RTX 4090. The official suggested retail price remains at 12999 RMB.
In terms of specifications, compared to the standard version RTX 4090, RTX 4090 D reduces the most important CUDA cores from 16384 to 14592, with a reduction of about 11%. This also represents a reduction in the number of SM units from 128 to 114. The basic frequency of the GPU core has been slightly increased from 2.23GHz to 2.28GHz, and the acceleration frequency has been slightly increased to 2.52GHz. The graphics memory of the new graphics card is 24GB GDDR6X, with a memory bit width of 384 bits. In addition, the power consumption of RTX 4090D has been slightly reduced from 450W to 425W.
In terms of performance, Nvidia claims that the RTX 4090 D, with DLSS and ray tracing enabled, far surpasses the previous generation flagship RTX 3090 Ti, with an average energy consumption reduction of nearly 25%. This product adopts the NVIDIA Ada Lovelace architecture and features the fourth generation Tensor Core and third generation RT Core. It supports NVIDIA DLSS 3 and can be used for 3D rendering, video editing, and graphic design.
Nvidia introduced that the RTX 4090D will be launched gradually from January 2024, with an official suggested retail price starting at 12999 yuan, consistent with the RTX 4090. In addition, the RTX 4090D does not have a public version card, and major AIC graphics card manufacturers will launch their own non-public version products. Multiple brands such as MSI, Mercedes Benz, Sotai, and Gengsheng have also launched their own RTX 4090D graphics cards. As of press release, NVIDIA's RTX 4090 D graphics card has not been available on the e-commerce platform in Chinese Mainland, and the retail price of the product is unknown.
RTX 4090D is a compliant product developed by Nvidia for the Chinese market in response to US export controls.
On the evening of October 17th, the United States updated its new regulations on chip exports, covering high-end gaming graphics cards for the first time, in addition to specialized AI computing chips. Specifically, the United States has changed the parameter specifications to "Total processing performance" or "performance density", and chips above a certain value are subject to export controls. The affected products include graphics processing units (GPUs), tensor processing units (TPUs), neural processors, memory processors, etc., including the RTX 4090.
The RTX 4090D launched by Nvidia this time is the "compliant version" of the RTX 4090. The RTX 4090 was launched at the end of 2022. As a flagship GPU equipped with the Ada Lovelace architecture, the graphics card has a high price and is mainly aimed at high-end players. Under the influence of export controls in the United States, in addition to the temporary shortage of RTX 4090 in the Chinese market, Nvidia's business has also been affected.
